It sounds like vim is great for text editing. Emacs works well for me but that's partly because I'm using other text-based software (including Gnus and a not-Gale client) that lives in Emacs so I may as well use the editor I'm already using for plenty else anyway. For some fast-startup easy things I use mg instead.
