When I was very little, in Vermont, my parents had (bottled) gas, but not electricity, so they had a real icebox. Later they got a Servel gas refrigerator -- a remarkable device with pipes in which ammonia, hydrogen, & water were artfully mixed & separated in a continuous process, without a compressor. You just heated one part of the system with a small gas flame, and another part magically got cold.
