Yeah, depressing.

Yeah, tree canopy probably isn't natural there and takes some work. But the same is true of agriculture and large human populations, too. Those aren't "natural" in California either. Nor lawns and swimming pools. And LA isn't high desert; trees like live oak or imported eucalyptus aren't alien to the climate.
