As it was explained to me, Ivory comes from the factory with some moisture content. Opening it up and letting it sit for a while allows it to dry out more completely. This reduces the amount of soap that lathers up / comes off when you add water to actually use it, with no perceived difference in how much lather / cleaning you're getting. But it lasts longer.
