Ah, House Republicans

So they whined about contraception funding in the stimulus package, Obama asked Waxman to take it out (though I haven't found if Waxman *did* take it out), and... not a single House Republican voted for the package anyway. God damn it Obama, govern like they do: you've got a majority, use it. They don't want to compromise; all the moderate Republicans got booted out in the last two elections anyway.

I'd sent an electronic message to Obama earlier today. The phones were busy.

Soups; Stross, horror, mini-Madoff, culture, crocodile tears, eyeball worms

There is life beyond the internet, though in this weather, not much life beyond my house. I'd bought a packet of udon from Bloomingfood's and have gone through it, in traditional pasta and in soup. It seems to be stickier than ordinary pasta; OTOH, I realize I was cooking it 'wrong', in full boil, when the package says to simmer it. Cooks fast in a boil, like a minute. Otherwise... it's a subtly different texture and flavor. Right now I've got an udon soup, with broth paste, miso, onion, spinach, dulse, and a bit of raw beef.

Earlier today I improvised hot and sour ramen, just from the name, adding lemon juice and cayenne. Not sure that it tasted anything like real "hot and sour" but I've had worse soups in Chinese restaurants.

I've had onion soups recently: onion boiled in broth paste, poured over shredded bread, with shredded Romano cheese. I think it tastes like my childhood dishes. Largely it tastes salty and onioney...
