Anti-science superstition has been increasing in the west for decades. I assume it's something to do with bad education and the spread of the delusion that reality is based on societal consensus.
That's standard for humans. Usually they attack witches, but they'll take aim at anyone whose skills seem esoteric to them -- and face it, meteorology literally is trying to predict the future based on observed patterns. That makes a lot of people uncomfortable, and when the news is bad, humans tend to turn violent. It's not new.
