The breast pump promotion article was interesting, and focused at the end on the warm fuzzies of maternal bonding, but I think failed to mention a couple of other good points:

1. Many women do not respond well to pumps. I breastfed for 19 months and was never able to get more than 2 oz with a good (though not hospital grade) pump. It is not as efficient as a baby and is something that you really have to work at.

2. In light of #1 - handing out breast pumps too early before a supply has been well established can cause many women to think they aren't making enough milk and switch to formula.

3. Even if you are a good pumper, pumping even every 3-4 hours can lead to low supply as babies don't really eat that way. They go through periods of cluster feeding (usually lasting a few days) nursing as often every hour - which dramatically increases a woman's milk supply.

Personally I would like to see more money made available for lactation consultants, which I think would help women across the social spectrum. Mine was a lifesaver.
