* GOP lawmaker opposes testing babies for HIV. "I'm not convinced that part of the role of government should be to protect individuals from the negative consequences of their actions."
* Jindal: say no to volcano monitoring
* Evil scientific copyright law, from John Conyers. Wikipedia says he's been submitting bills for universal health care, so I can't quite hate him, though those bills would ban private insurers from covering stuff covered by the national plan, which I'm not socialist enough to like.

More proof that Republicans are evil and that Congress people on both the left & the right haven't even the most remote clue about effective and useful copyright law. OTOH, I am definitely enough of a socialist to be a huge fan of any law that both provides public healthcare and works to kill off private insurance. From my PoV, the entire idea of private for-profit insurance is impressively wrong-headed.

The piece on epigenetics isn't all that surprising, but it does point out the need for long-term improvements in nutrition, healthcare, and general levels of stress and violence among the poor, since after a couple of generations you have a population who will be in far better mental shape then their ancestors. Given the strong correlation between childhood stress (and perhaps parental childhood stress) and depression, this could do lots of good. It's also my suspicion that doing this for a few generations may help reduce extreme religiosity (as may well have already happened in much of western europe EU).

The lawmaker believes in original sin, I take it?
