His "progressive conservatism" sounds pretty appealing to a modern economic liberal, and supposedly he was popular in the Philippines, a place we messed up at some point.

Just watched the season 4 finale. Technobabble isn't technobabble if you babble fast and charmingly enough, I suppose. They need more plots not involving Daleks (how many times have we seen them despite having all been killed in the Time War?), Cybermen, Sontarans, the destruction of Earth, or the destruction of all reality. And less cheese bringing back, well, everyone.

I've decided Earth is the Hellmouth of the Doctor's cosmos, a third-rate backwater that nonetheless seems to be key to Everything, or at least everything bad.

I'm rooting for his "daughter" as the next companion. No comment on the fates of the companions in the finale. Just... no comment. Though the words "Mary Sue" came to mind at one point. On to serious stuff:

* Krugman on the new Know-Nothings.
* Democratic administrations: faster economic growth, less inequality.
* Influences and details of Obama's economics ideas. A blend of Bob Reich and Bob Rubin, who themselves have moved closer together; Chicago School influences; a campaign interested in experts and research; bigger tax cuts for most Americans than under McCain's plan; us having lots of what the market is good at (cars, houses) and little of what it's bad at (infrastructure, mass education); lack of a snazzy way of explaining how Democrats are good for the economy and the middle class, to match Reaganesque "small government, low taxes" slogans.

That last is a good article; I now feel more optimistic about Obama actually being a good president in key ways.
