12 books in the past 18 days! A huge change from the past year. Even in Chile, with a handy library, I was mostly social or online, not reading paper. 11 of the 12 were fiction, though some pretty long. *glares at Robin Hobb*
Democratic reform! Franchise expansion! Emancipation! The Liveship Trilogy may be one of the most democracy and human rights friendly works in SF/F.
Trigger warning: May Contain Rape. Hobb writes bleak bleak angst darkest-before-the-dawn books, I think the first trilogy had physical torture and certainly had total emotional destruction and despair of the main character. Liveship has many viewpoint characters, some of whom are female. Yep, she goes there.
At that, the trilogy may still be lighter than the first one, or even the third. Maybe because of multiple viewpoints to share the bleakbleak around.
Not sure if I want to seek our more Hobb. She writes well and interestingly, but long and dark. The one previous book was the Gypsy, Steven Brust and Megan Lindholm (aka Robin Hobb). It's been a while and was much shorter but I think had similar aspects. Contrast with Hodgell or Black Company, which can be dark and funny, or Night in the Lonesome October... admittedly nothing is like Lonesome, but I wish more was.
