It has Vista. This needs to change. Question is, to what?
Linux choices:
Fedora
Debian
Ubuntu
Slackware
SUSE
Mandriva

BSD:
Free
Net
Open

Probably no point to Net. I liked OpenBSD, back in the day. Then again, laptop. Also, no static IP.

Ubuntu

I've had good experiences with (K)Ubuntu on a laptop. The new version is coming out next month (Tribe 5 pre-release is out).

OpenBSD, maybe...

I can't say I've ever encountered a problem with OpenBSD on a laptop, and I've dealt with it on a Dell, Toshiba and Thinkpad. In fact, it was the only one that had a driver for my wireless card the first time I used it, that's why I became a user.

What's wrong with XP? It's a fairly solid working system that is exceedingly easy for even someone as non-technically literate as myself to use, and it works vastly better (I'm told) than Vista, which I have avoided.

Besides the fact that my various XP-enabled computer acquisitions have not included install disks, I like the utility and transparency of Unix and the politics of Open Source. I'll stick with XP out of laziness if it comes on my computer and doesn't give me trouble, but I'm not going to seek it out.

And there's development work I should be doing, which means Unix, and odd window manages to explore, which means Linux/BSD. (I guess Macs as well, but I'd think the work larger, and anyway I got a cheap laptop, not a Mac.)

Given what I've been hearing recently, it sounds linke Ubuntu is the way to go. I'm going to watch for the soon-to-be-released version, and try it out.
