First of all, slipping one point on a five-hundred point scale is so small as to be statistical static. Secondly, I suspect that when you factor in "new media" (including online stories) the drop vanishes.

We are living in the most literate society and age in human history: a Golden Age of the Republic of Letters. If you compare, not across decades but across centuries, this becomes obvious.
