Romana, Time Lady of Gallifrey, scion of the most advanced civilization in the universe, got kidnapped by relative barbarians. Twice. In one episode. By the same people. On the horse she escaped the first time on. Then she nearly acquiesced to a marriage which would have killed her, and took a stitching lesson.

Martha is *so* much better.

With the exception of when she left and Human Nature, I also saw Martha as remarkably weak and compliant. Rose managed to be fairly strong in some episodes, but from my PoV Martha managed this in very few indeed. The gender politics of Doctor Who have always been a bit dodgy.
