Didn't Israel already give up land for peace with the Palestinians? I seem to recall them ceding Gaza a few years ago for that reason.

They pulled out their settlers and troops. Israel still controlls the airspace -- no Palestinian airports -- and coast, with the tiny interface with Egypt being the only border not under Israeli control. And the Gaza Strip has the population density of Chicago, being one big refugee camp, not exactly a great economic base.

So they gave up something, and Hamas didn't exactly respond rationally, but Israel hasn't given a stable basis for peace.
