Nazis vs. Robots
2006-08-15 09:29Sometimes my dreams blatantly reflect the events of the past day. I think last night was similar, though a bit more oblique. The dream involved a posthuman Hitler who was lording it over a small (6000?) population of humans on a planet somewhere; he'd been found by a population of civilized posthuman robots who were trying to do something about this. Right before I woke up, Hitler's human avatar had stepped into a lava stream he'd opened up in combat, to be replaced by a new avatar -- "see how godlike I am?". The two robots on whom action was centered had also stepped into the lava, to defuse that claim. At a subsequent "town hall" meeting, Hitler warned about how lenient and restrained he'd been; the robots laughed at this, as he'd had no reason to hold back, while they could easily destroy the planet but wanted to spare the humans.
What does this have to do with yesterday? Well, some blogs I read had buzzed about Gunter Grass announcing he'd been in the Waffen SS as a youth, so there's your Nazis. As for the robots, I've had Chobits and backups on the brain, but... when I woke up, my first thought about the two robots leading the action was "Trurl and Klapaucius!" -- the constructors from Lem's Cyberiad. Which didn't come up at all yesterday, but is a favorite book of Fanw and myself, so the fact that she called me and we talked yesterday might have spread activation to that concept, especially if helped out by all the Chobits thinking.
