crossing a stroad intersection

People often 'jaywalk' in the middle of long blocks, even on busy stroads, generally because the block is long and they don't to detour to crosswalk. But there's also an idea that it can be safer, counter-intuitively. Nothing really deep here, just thinking things through explicitly:
