Man, LJ seems slow the last couple of days. And I'm a paying member. Also, what's this big leaf doing at the top of my posting screen?

POLI: Evan Bayh interview
"My take on that was, I'm reasonably confident that there are no death panels in this bill, but if there are, that's an appointment I want. That's power. Forget Finance. Forget Appropriations. I want the death panel."
"how many cents do you believe are wasted? Some people said 100, some people said zero. The average was something like 44, 45 cents on the dollar. That's not even possible! A lot of it is just transfer
payments, the government doesn't hold onto it long enough to waste that amount. But if that's what people believe, that's the notion we've got to get to."

Misc
me: Yeah, I wondered the same thing [how they know Gobekli Tepe was a temple]. Lay perception is that archaeologists tend to label anything they can't explain as temples or ritual artifacts. I have an apocryphal story saved about a little girl wandering into her father's office, with lots of small-sized tools around, and asking "Daddy can I play with the toys?" with the father going "...oh."
someone else: Here's a true story: We have a tremendous amount of knowledge about the location of Roman-era olive oil presses (and by extension olive plantations) in North Africa due to an exhaustive survey undertaken by a Victorian archaeologist. Unfortunately for him, he undertook the survey believing the olive oil presses were actually sacrificial altars.
