Possibly... in one sense of subversion or another. Word is that it started life as a parody of mecha shows, and scrambled to get serious when they realized audience reaction. So either "psych! girl saves the day!" or "ha ha, the girl saves the day, yeah right -- wait, they're actually buying it".
