Not an author to read for the happy endings. Or maybe it's just the Cat series.

Also, humans suuuuuuck.

The weirdest thing for me about Dreamfall is that Cat is on the Hydran homeworld, meeting Hydrans, and not once explicitly thinks back to the ones in Psion. Oh, very late, there's passing mention of the Cinder ones, and wondering if things have improved, but there's no compare-and-contrast despite my thinking the deep differences would be massively salient.

Her other books are a lot less like this. Outcastes of the Heaven Belt, and her Snow Queen series as a whole do a good bit better wrt happy endings.
