Yeah, I expect the ledger size problem is solvable, you shouldn't need the entire state to verify the consistency of current transactions.
I'm pretty confident the "correctness, cost-effective, decentralized" trilemma is true. Bitcoin definitely jettisons the "cost-effective", it basically runs the other two properties on being as computation-intensive as is feasible.
