After visiting the Jewish museum Friday, I found myself wanting pastrami. BOP Kosh (nee Koch?) deli was a block away, and had a good price ($12), but no pastrami in stock at the moment. Oh well.
Today I set out around my neighborhood, having asked Google Maps for candidates.
Farina: no pastrami on menu, or on request. Not that surprising, it's an Italian place, mostly specializing in chicken cutlet sandwiches with salami or such added. So why did I come here? Because there was a review praising their pastrami, with a photo, even. Did someone get confused as to what store they were reviewing.
Famous 4th Street deli: pastrami definitely on menu. $22 for a regular sandwich. I felt I didn't want pastrami that much, and left. Maybe I'll come back, and I actually think I've never lived so close to a Jewish deli before, so it's a good chance to try out various foods of "my people", like chopped liver or whitefish salad.
Wholesome Deli: the big menu on the back wall said Reuben (with pastrami), alongside other options, none of which had prices. I asked, and got told in bad English "no beef". I think he meant no beef at all, not just out of stock. I'm guessing a change of ownership at some point, from a more general deli to a halal chicken and lamb place. Which is fine, but then change your menu. Cover it up with tape and paper if you can't afford to have a giant piece of plastic taken down... I felt I'd mostly left home for pastrami, and I'm also biased against shops that don't make their products and prices easy to find, so decided the world was telling me to be frugal, and went home for eggs and Italian sausage.
The frugal option, of course, would be to bike over to Giant and get some pastrami from their deli. Or even the local convenience store/deli, which has higher prices but maybe not proportionally higher on expensive deli meat. But that's for another time, I'm stuffed.
