So, my birthday's in May, at which time I'd just arrived in Chicago and was trying to convince my mother to go see a doctor, since she was having little problems like not eating and decreasing physical energy and increasing chest pains, on account of which nothing happened apart from a few e-mails or phone calls.

I've lived in this apartment -- "D-flat Minor" -- for two years without having many people over, let alone a group, largely because, as you may or may not be able tell from the few photos I put up, it's rather small -- 30 square meters, or so.

But I decided to bite the bullet and have a late party for myself, actually in my apartment, not off at Turkuaz like last year.

It went well. I invited a sampling of people from various social modes in Bloomington, feeling weird in some cases because getting only two of the gamers at a time seems like an unlikely occurrence (let alone any at all early on a weeknight) and several RSVPed not being able to come, or didn't RSVP. But seven people came, and I found that I was right, eight people do kind of crowd this place, and take up much of the seating. There was more on the couch, except the couch got filled up with stuff from a small table, which got drafted so that people could get more access to the food. Probably I should have moved the card table out to the center, so people could sit around it.

Something like $70 got spent on food and tools, which was a lot more than I expected, not counting Shiver's wine, but most of it got eaten, or at least heavily dented. Some stuff was splurging, like the Port Salut cheese, or the fresh mozzarella in olive oil and herbs, and the Kettle chips didn't even get opened, and dried pineapple or chocolate covered espresso beans last forever. 12oz Andouille sausage and 1 pound ham resulted into a couple of sausage pieces and a fair bit of ham.

Of course, the important bit was the socializing (but the logistics are important to me...) but I'm probably too tired to summarize that, even if I should, which I'm not sure of. We did have this weird thread though: G&C had brought stuff from Trader Joe's (hey! take me!) which led to talk about how TJ's seems too good to be true, in prices and the Stepford-happy employees. A bit later there was politics, and talk of how the Bush administration should suffer a Hell of working in Wal-Mart, with Cheney forced to confront the public as a cashier, and Bush as a restocker. Then it was decided if W-M was Hell, TJ was Heaven... everyone seemed to get into the conversation, which surprised me, since I thought one of us was conservative, but then who knows what that means, these days.

Later we discovered that Harry Potter 5 is out tonight, but the midnight showings are sold out. It took Google to find a phone number for the movie theater -- the easy to find websight directs you to Fandango, and the phone book was useless. OTOH, Fandango website told me it was sold out right as the manager told lyceum that it was sold out.

Now to, um, clean.
