People say they value balconies, but do they use them? This seems debated beyond my blog comments. I found a couple of Reddit threads asking that, and answers were a mix of "no", "thought I would but no", "yes because of covid", "yes, but briefly" (step out for air or a smoke), and "yes, all the time". I won't try quantifying them. Answers also included a couple uses I hadn't thought of: letting a cat/dog/toddler go "outside", and increased ventilation, since doors are longer than windows. Someone explicitly said that they could be benefiting from the balcony without being out on it. And I was reminded that a friend uses hers as a bird feeding platform.

Near me is University Village, a cluster of I think UCB-owned housing, 2-3 stories of apartments around courtyards and such. I biked up and down its quiet private streets today, and looked. Most if not all of the units have balconies, fairly sizable ones. Even at my low bike speeds, my ability to identify everything I saw was limited, but I'm fairly confident that a majority of the balconies had Stuff. Chairs, bicycles, plants, tables (with patio umbrella), sofas, unidentifiable junk, and clothes racks, in roughly that order. Sample image 1, sample image 2.

In many dimensions of zoning code I want to go in a more laissez-faire direction than the US norm. More allowable height and units and rent-intention, less parking, more businesses, more choice of how much or how little land to use. But there are a couple of ways in which I'm tempted to tighten the screws.
