I don't pay attention, but it's true that saying the liiteral translation of "Please pass the salt" is weird. However, I often say things like 意玲,請你把醬油傳過來。 (Loose translation: Yi Ling, pass the soy sauce please. Liiteral translation: Yi Ling, please would you pass the soy sauce over?) Saying things like 給我醬油 (give me the soy sauce) or 我要醬油 (I want the soy sauce) feels far too rude for me. My family doesn't do that.
