culture of poverty is interesting... presumably thinking along those lines prompted the bulletin boards in IN about, er, optimism and perseverance.

i think we've been too hands-off with minority cultures. if you're a white kid in a shitty neighborhood with crappy parents, the tv *still* bombards you with good role models, educational content, and public service announcements about precisely how to not suck. But you see almost no cartoon characters and PSA's aimed at poor minority cultures... people are too afraid to touch the topic. I once stayed up late enough to hear a PSA on the radio suggesting that young black teens shouldn't be racist against white teens... which, honestly, is a good thing to say. No one should be racist. There should be PSA's prompting *both* groups to be sane. But still I was in awe of the balls it took to put that on air, even at 4am.
