Cleveland 2
2010-08-08 12:19Things I forgot:
The Hope Memorial or Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, with flanking statues that Fanw originally analogized with the Argonath or pillars of Isildur and Anarion outside Gondor.

Cleveland is blacker than places I've lived in a long while, though the airport lounges didn't reflect that. Allegedly at 50% depopulation from the peak, with lots of empty buildings. A big shortage of pedestrian crossing lights in my limited experience. 2BR downtown hip area condo for $170,000 which struck my hosts as rather expensive. Big condo?
Hip area was in the region of the westside farmer's market. Mostly indoors, in an old warehouse or something, like the pier market in Seattle. Lots of non-local produce such as oranges, bananas, and mangoes. Still, good peaches and mangoes that we tried. There's a second building hosting lots of meat and some cheese, and also fudge. As for the hipness of the area, well:

disturbingly decorated trash bin http://www.flickr.com/photos/mindstalk/4872279164/
Unphotographed nearby: lots of parked bicycles; a Cambodian-Vietnamese restaurant; Horizontal Books, a bookstore that somehow acquires remaindered books or something and sells them at 50% off... 70% off if you get 3 or more. Horizontal referring to the stacks of identical books, I guess.
